Formula Variable with replacement path

Hi,

I'm trying to see if we can get characteristic values into a formula. Eg: I have US99, CA34 as values for 0PROFITCENTER. Can I get these values into a formula variable using replacement path ! If 0PROFITCENTER has only numeric values like 45, 68 then variable  working fine otherwise it is showing X as values. Is this a limitation!
